02 Mar The Naughtiest Dog Breeds
After two months of providing our free poisons advice service to pet owners we thought we would share with you the dog breeds who seem to get themselves into trouble the most:
1. Labrador Retrievers
2. Staffordshire Bull Terrier
3. Australian Kelpie
4. Border Collie
Australian’s love a Labrador! They are the most popular breed in the country, so it is not surprising we received a large number of calls regarding their mischievous behaviour.
However, did you know that many Labradors have a genetic mutation that makes them hungry? Some are missing part or all of a gene known as POMC, which helps to regulate food intake (appetite) and sense how full they are after eating (satiety). This means that many of them are always hungry and on the search for food. Combine this with a keen sense of smell, it makes the Labrador a very effective poison-finding machine!
The mutation also makes Labradors easier to train and eager to please; a reason they make such great service dogs and family pets. No wonder we love them!
