Naughtiest breeds

After another busy year of providing a free poisons advice service to pet owners in Australia and New Zealand, we wanted to share the most common dog breeds that the Animal Poisons Helpline was contacted about in 2022.

1. Labrador Retrievers
2. Staffordshire Bull Terriers
3. Border Collies
4. Golden Retrievers
5. Miniature Dachshunds
6. Australian Kelpies
7. French Bulldogs
8. Jack Russell Terriers
9. German Shepherd Dogs
10. Cocker Spaniels

Labradors are the most popular breed in the country, so it is not surprising that they clutched the top spot once again. However, did you know that many Labradors are missing part or all of a gene that helps regulate food intake? This means that some Labradors are always hungry and on the search for food. Combine this with a keen sense of smell and it makes the Labrador a very effective poison-finding machine!

Did your dog make the list? If your pet has ingested something they should not have, please phone the Animal Poisons Helpline1300 869 738 (AU) or 0800 869 738 (NZ) for advice. The Animal Poisons Helpline provides a free service for all pet owners in Australia and New Zealand, and we can rapidly determine if your pet requires immediate veterinary assessment or can be observed at home.
