31 Oct Great News with 5-FU Creams
The Animal Poisons Helpline has recently posted about the dangers of pets ingesting 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) cream. 5-FU is found in several prescription creams that are used for solar keratosis (sun damaged skin) and other precancerous skin lesions.
Over the past few months, the Helpline has been working closely with the manufacturer of a commonly dispensed 5-FU cream. With the manufacturer’s support, we are pleased to advise that the Australian and New Zealand Consumer Medicines Information (CMI) and Product Information (PI) for this cream has been updated to include animal safety advice.
We hope that these updates will reduce animal exposures to these products by raising awareness amongst pet owners and healthcare professionals. This is a great outcome for animal welfare in Australasia and is just one way that the Helpline continues to achieve its mission of reducing animal illness and death from poisonings.
